Packing a Final Drive for Shipping

We recently asked a well known motorcycle racer, whose normal job is working on BMW motorcycles, how to pack a final drive unit prior to shipping it to a shop for rebuild. Here is his reply.

They need to be packed well for shipping.

I do not recommend that people make complex crates for their rear drives. It simply is not necessary. In fact, packing the drive against wood is a good way to damage the painted finish. Wooden crates cause splinters, are additional weight for shipping cost, and are frowned upon by the USPS and UPS.

I suggest wrapping the drained drive in paper towels, sealing in a plastic bag to contain leakage, then roll it up in bubble wrap, stuffing that whole big ball into a STURDY cardoard box, then placing that box inside another sturdy box, with a minimum of 4 inches of crushed paper padding between the inner and outer boxes.
Tape an envelope to the outside of the inner box with the following information:

Name
Address,(return shipping address)
City/State/ZIP
Home/Work/Cell telephone numbers
email address
Year/model that rear is from description of problems noted and repairs requested.
Insure package for $2500

Here are the only four people that I would trust to rebuild my final drive. And yes, I did, once, use a dealer not on this list. And yes, they screwed it up. This list is in no particular order.
